Web glossary

Useful web, WordPress, UI/UX, SEO and web-quality terms explained without unnecessary jargon.

GLOSSARY

Useful terms, explained simply.

Clear vocabulary makes it easier to understand a quote, technical recommendation or design decision.

Accessibility

Designing and developing a website so more people can perceive, understand and use it, including with keyboard navigation or assistive technology.

Example: A keyboard-operable menu helps someone who cannot use a mouse.

ACF

Advanced Custom Fields. A WordPress plugin used to structure manageable content with fields tailored to the project.

Example: An Opening hours field lets you change hours without rebuilding the page.

CMS

Content Management System. It lets a team edit pages, copy, media or products without directly editing code.

Example: You correct an address in the administration area without editing code.

Core Web Vitals

Experience-focused metrics that cover key aspects such as main content loading, responsiveness and visual stability.

Example: An image that pushes a button while loading harms visual stability.

Domain name

The readable address used to reach a website, such as calynevo.com. Ownership and access should remain clear for the client.

Example: Your domain and hosting can come from different providers.

Hosting

Infrastructure that stores the files, database and services required for a website to run.

Example: Moving a website to another host does not necessarily change its address.

Lighthouse

An audit tool used to review areas including performance, accessibility, good practices and technical SEO.

Example: A good automated score does not guarantee everyone can use the website.

Responsive design

Design that adapts layout, navigation and components to different screen sizes.

Example: Page columns can stack vertically on a phone.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation. It covers structure, content, indexing, performance and technical clarity.

Example: A clear service page helps communicate its subject; no search position is guaranteed.

SSL / HTTPS

Protection for the connection between the browser and the website. HTTPS is also a basic expectation for trust and security.

Example: The padlock protects data in transit but does not prove a seller is trustworthy.

UI

User Interface. The visible and interactive layer of a product: components, typography, colour, states and layout.

Example: The size and state of a button are interface design decisions.

UX

User Experience. The quality of the overall journey: understanding, effort, logic, accessibility and ease of reaching a goal.

Example: Finding the right service and sending an enquiry are part of the user journey.

WCAG

International accessibility guidelines used to make web content more perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.

Example: Contrast and keyboard operation are among the points to check.

WooCommerce

An e-commerce plugin for WordPress that adds catalogue, cart, checkout and commercial functionality.

Example: A shop can offer size or colour variants.

WordPress

An open-source CMS used for manageable websites, from brochure sites to more structured editorial or e-commerce projects.

Example: Content can be managed, but updates and backups still need planning.

XML sitemap

A file for search engines that lists important website URLs to help discovery and indexing.

Example: A sitemap supports page discovery without guaranteeing indexing.
