What content should you prepare before building a website?

Copy, imagery, services, products and legal information directly influence the structure and timing of a project.

Website content planning
In short

You do not need everything finished before the first conversation. But knowing what already exists and what is missing makes scoping much easier.

Business information

Gather your name, contact details, service area, opening hours, business description, services, process, FAQs and any required legal information.

Customer-focused copy

Explain services using the language customers use. Clarify the problem solved, limitations, conditions and what the person should do next.

Imagery and brand assets

Collect logos, colours, typefaces, team photos, premises, products, projects and testimonials. Identify what can be published and what must stay private.

For e-commerce

Prepare product names, categories, SKUs, weights, variants, prices, stock, imagery, descriptions, delivery and returns information.

For multilingual websites

Choose a source language and decide who approves each translation. Avoid starting many language versions without a clear approval process.

Illustrative example

For a service page, prepare the customer need, your response, what is included, any limits and how to contact you. Add an authorised photograph or documented project rather than an invented testimonial. A shared folder with clear filenames and an assigned approver reduces unnecessary revisions.

Your practical checklist

  • Give each page a purpose and draft copy.
  • Check contact details, published prices and practical information.
  • Confirm permission to publish images.
  • List missing content and who will provide it.
